Hi, these are my notes i put together to post up on my companies fault log website. They are pretty simplified so others can understand them but they are a list of all the problems and solutions i have come across. I now have WSUS 3.0 SP2 running on Windows 7 in 2 of my Schools both with Windows Server 2008 and they have both worked perfectly, all client machines populated in the WSUS admin console without any work. I hope one of the solutuions here works for you.
WSUS 3.0 SP2 Troubleshooting

Client Troubleshooting

After you have installed and configured WSUS 3.0 SP2, including all the policy settings you will need to work on getting the client machines to be able to speak to the server. Inside the WSUS Administration Console you will see a Tree on the left hand side of the window, click the Computers tab then open the All Computers tab. This will bring up a list (with various information) of the computers that are speaking with the server and telling it what updates they need.

Sometimes the computers will populate on their own without needing any work to be done on them, but the majority of the time they will not and you will have to change and delete a few settings.

On a computer that isn’t populating you will have to follow these instructions:

Before we begin the process it is important to stop the automatic update service.

1. Go to the start menu, click run and type “net stop wuauserv”

2. Go to the start menu, click run and type “regedit”

3. Browse to HKLM\Software\Microsft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate, and locate and delete the following keys:

· SusClientId

· SusClientIdValidation

(This step is very important as if your computers have all been created using the same image the SusClientId & SusClientIdValidation will be duplicated on every computer. Meaning either they will not populate in the WSUS Admin Console or you will have computers appearing then disappearing in the console, because they all have the same id’s).

4. Next browse to HKLM\Software\Microsft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update, and locate and delete the following keys:

· LastWaitTimeout

· DetectionstartTime

· NextDetectionTime

5. Next browse to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Internet Settings\Connections, and locate and delete the following keys:

· WinHttpSettings

6. Next browse to HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows, and see if there is a Windows Update policy. If there isn’t you will need to find a computer that does have the policy and Export the policies onto a USB stick. Next insert the USB stick into the computer that need the policy and locate and double click on the policy. A small window should pop up telling you the import of the Windows Update policy was successful.

7. Once all this had been done you need to start the update service by going to the start menu, clicking run and typing in “net start wuauserv”.

8. Go to the start menu, click run and type “wuauclt.exe /detectnow” this will go and probe the WSUS Server and install the missing patches to the PC that you have set to install. It will also recreate the SusClientId you deleted with a unique one

9. Go to the start menu, click run and type “services.msc”. Make sure the following Services are started and set have the following settings:

· Automatic Updates – Automatic

· BITS – Manual

· Event Logs – Automatic

· WUSServ - Automatic
